Cherry, after the storm

A storm blew through on Wednesay night and kept us awake by blowing all the acorns of the oak trees, which sounded like machine gun fire as they rained down on the deck and roof. In the morming, lo, there was light, and the light was good. Set of 20 pix here or check out the whole In-Between Places project if you like. Mappage here.

Flickr/Google Maps integration hack

Community Walk, originally uploaded by John Brownlow.

This is a terrifically clever little site which allows you to link Google maps to Flickr (or indeed any photo host that allows you to address images from external sites). The scripts currently crash Safari (although the latest version seems to have less problems). The developer tells me that much tighter integration with Flickr is just around the corner. I love this. Check out the StreetPhoto page.

Good Light

Trailer, off King Street, originally uploaded by John Brownlow.

One thing I've started to realize is how dependent my pictures are on good light, and how rare it is. So I made a promise to myself that anytime I saw good light, I would get a camera and make some pictures. Well, this morning I was put to the test. The light wasn't spectacular, but it was good... slanting and a little milky with just a few clouds in the sky. I'm glad I went out.

Stumped

Stumped, originally uploaded by John Brownlow.

Thornbury, Ontario, September 2005. This tree was removed forcibly to make way for a new golf course. Did I mention how much I hate golf? If I ever start playing golf my wife is under strict instructions to take out a hit on me.

Poplar

The Apple Farm, Griersville, Ontario, 2004.

I was struck by something Tim Atherton said about trying to make landscape photographs which had no particular focus. There's something about the Canadian landscape that lends itself almost perfectly to this approach. But it's very hard to do.

This photograph from the 1Ds almost gets there. There's another version which is all tack-sharp which I think works as well if not better. But like everything from the 1Ds it wants to be printed bigger than the file will allow.

Umbrellas

I put a collection of 360 street pans up on Flickr... the first time I've really tried to collect them all together in one place.

Cake

The Noblex is a tricky beast to shoot people with and you waste a lot of film but sometimes it just works. This is exactly the kind of picture I wanted to make with it. It's very similar to the stitched panoramas I've done before, but it has a spontaneous rather than staged quality.

In order to do this kind of thing you have to shoot with the close-up lenses pretty much permanently attached.

Ragweed

It was hot on Sunday and as I was going to fly model airplanes with my son, I saw this ragweed. After we finished flying, I went back and dug out the Rollei and found some 120 film.

This is the first photograph I've taken and meant in months... almost a year in fact.

I think I'm going back to film.

Refuge

(Entry for the "Streetphoto":http://lists.topica.com/lists/streetphoto Salon themed "Refuge":http://genec.com/federico/salon/urlist.php?secth=97)

This is one of the first 360 digital composites I ever shot. I think I used a Nikon 5000, maybe with a fisheye add-on. I still like it. It was part of a series called "Someone lives here" and someone did indeed live in the red hut.

Buen Retiro

Buen Retiro, Madrid, originally uploaded by Pinkheadedbug.

Here's a quick set of pictures from a fortnight I spent working in Madrid. It was pretty intense, and in the whole two weeks I only had a couple of hours free. All taken with the rinky dink Canon S400.
